Transplanted Swedish middle distance star Birger Ohlsson didn't know what the Dynamic Duo was. Mary Beth Steffen, Tuesday Nite Track Meet's assistant meet director, explained to Birger the importance of this classic pursuit race in the scheme of area distance running. Mary Beth, who speaks fluent Swedish, quickly found a partner for Ohlsson at a Tuesday meet in the person of Jen Kramer. Birger never heard of Jen but because he thought she was cute, he agreed to be her partner.
The result, as they say, is history. Birger toured the first mile in 4:47 and towed Jamie Rodriguez (4:50), Dave Twarog (4:59) and Justin Corelli (4:59) along with him. Jamie is the Penn Relays 10,000 meter champion; Dave is a former national junior college cross country champion; and Justin was the New York State champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase two years ago. But the credentials of those three champions didn't deter Birger as he "sort of" set a new course record. The marshall in the pace car briefly pointed the men off course on to the grass instead of on Schermerhorn Road and Birger's official time of 14:50 was raised to a record-tying 14:53. Kevin Williams and J. R. Gaige share the record. Ohlsson and Kramer won the 46-54 age group as well as the overall title.
Shaker grad Jared Paul teamed with summer sensation and Bishop Magin junior Alyssa Lotmore to win the under 36 age group. Alyssa turned in the fastest time of the day for a female, 18:05. The aforementioned age group had 16 teams compete for awards that went eight deep.
Chris Kram and Empire Games 10,000 silver medalist Tara Sheedy joined together in the 37-45 age group and the Dave Twarog-Kate Twarog combination won their second Duo in the 55-63 category. Kate had a fine race and is poised to compete for a varsity spot on the talented Providence College cross country roster this fall.
Paul and Dawn Steciuk won the first-place shirts in the 64-72 age group. The Steciuk family should have won another award--there were seven Steciuks who finished the race.
The 73-81 category is always a very competitive one and 2001 proved to be no exception. Phil Borgese and Jodi Plantz won a hotly contested dual with Colonie coaches Chris Dunn and Maryann Reilly-Johnson and Averill Park coach Mark Mindel and Galway conditioner Lynn Prehn. Mindel and Prehn were foiled in their bid for a second straight Duo crown.
Gary Czupil owes buddy Dale Broomhead. Last Saturday in Saratoga, Dale teamed Gary up with perennial Duo champion Nancy Nicholson. The results were predictable-- Nancy's team won again; this time in the 82-90 division. Nancy has won nine Duos with seven different men.
Ed Powers also usually finds a way to win. Ed has been victorious with Inga Aiken (twice) and this year with Mary Ann Serien. Ed and Mary Ann won the 91-99 division.
Martha DeGrazia was heard commenting, "The Colonie Town Pool is such a nice pool. And it's such a lovely day for swimming." A nice day for swimming it was but it wasn't such a nice day for running. Heat and humidity not withstanding, Martha's partner, summer running star Paul Bennett combined with Martha to win the "loaded" 100+ category. Prior winning tandems like the Lutzkers, the Swaseys, Paul Murray and Jayne Zinke, 9-time champions the Stockmans, as well as the Hoffmans had to be bested to bring home the coveted first place shirt and they were bested. 12 teams competed in this "dinosaur" division.
Always trying to be innovative, the meet directors have come up with a new award structure for next year. We will order 144 shirts of all colors and styles. We will not put any place on the back. We will give out shirts as prizes (the winners get first choice, etc.) until all the shirts are gone. That way 72 teams will get awards. Last year we had 50 teams and this year 62 so it looks like everybody will get a shirt as an award. Also, after Mary Beth and Dale get their shirts in 2002, they can bring them to their favorite screenprinter and have 1st place put on the back.
As always, the Colonie Recreation Department wants to thank our volunteers for donating their time. Karl Steffen, Ann Marie McMillan, Lynne Ogren, Sharon Boehlke, Colleen Sheedy, Bob Oates, Mark Mindel, Nancy Nisiewicz and Don Myers, make the race run smoothly and efficiently year after year and we hope everone comes back for "Dynamic Duo" 2002 when the women run first.
