Former Columbia track and cross country star Chelsea Corr and Amsterdam High School phenom Jake Krong were the fastest individuals at the 24th Annual Dynamic Duo 3-mile couples race sponsored by the Colonie Recreation Department. Both led their teams to victory in the team-formatted race. Jake and Jenna Krong won the -36 age group and Chelsea and James O'Neil were victorious in the "loaded" 37-46 category. The Scotia tandems of Todd Raymond and Erin Doak and Jamey Maswick and Becky White were a close second and third respectively.
Paul Husson overcame a lead of 1:45 by Carrie Trimarchi and led teammate Kristen Strussner to victory over Carrie and husband Mike in the 46-54 category. We hope Carrie doesn't hold the "blown save" against her hubby who is the boy's soccer coach at Colonie High School.
Tom Faughnan and Ashley Couch improved on last year's third place finish in winning the 55-63 age group. Ashley will be going into her senior year at Colonie High and hopes to lead her Colonie Cross Country squad to another fine season.
Paul Bennett was "dropped from the rotation" by Martha DeGrazia but rallied with help from workout partner Dale Broomhead. No, Paul didn't run with Dale. Dale secured one of his former Lansingburgh High School Cross Country stars, Christina Bensi, and Paul duplicated his Duo win of 2001 as he and Christina won the 64-72 category.
Ed Menis was told to "get off his duff" by wife Laurie Hoyt and rallied with a 17:55 effort as the Menis-Hoyt duo won their third Dynamic Duo. Menis and Hoyt held off a hard-charging Chris Dunne as the Dunne/Maryann Johnson squad got second for the second year in a row. Mark Mindel didn't "get off his duff" as he and Vanessa Alderman got 4th in the same age group.
Dale Broomhead was also the "broker" of the Gary Czupil/Nancy Nicholson squad and Gary and Nancy won their second Duo in succession. Gary is also a Broomhead training partner. Nancy just wins every Duo she enters no matter who her teammate is.
Dale has been proving his value as an "agent" the past few years but has been unable to get a win for himself. Mary Beth Steffen was dropped by numerous partners (J.R. Gaige, Todd Orvis, Dave Herman, Frank Myers to name a few) as she chalked up a 17-year Dynamic Duo losing streak. Thanks to a secret workout on the Duo course by both partners the week of the race, Dale and Mary Beth finally won the 91-100 age group, just beating last year's winners Ed Powers and Mary Ann Serien and the Bob Oates/Sandy Morley team. I guess that proves that anything is possible.
Martha DeGrazia dropped 2001 winning partner Paul Bennett like a bad habit and secured Dennis Fillmore in an effort to break Phil Jessen's and Cindy Schermerhorn's 100+ age group effort. Martha and Dennis came up just 13 seconds short as they beat the fast closing Don Myers/Kathie Hillard squad. The Stockman's (Wade and Anny) were fourth in their effort to win their 10th Dynamic Duo. The Stockmans share the most wins record with Denise Herman and Frank Myers. "Ancient Warrior" Bob McFarland finally won a Duo shirt as he teamed up with Ginny Pezzula to finish 5th in the 100+ group.
Attendance was slightly down in 2002. We had 48 teams this year and 61 last year. Anybody needing a partner for 2003, you'll need to work out with Dale Broomhead and he'll get you a winning partner. Does Vanessa Alderman know Dale?
