ALBANY -- Jen Fazioli had been waiting for this day half of her life. Because, deep down, she always knew she was born to be a marathoner. On Sunday morning she proved it to everyone else. In her first attempt at 26.2 miles, Fazioli blew all but one solitary competitor out of the water in the 20th annual Mohawk-Hudson River Marathon. This delicate dynamo, weighing not much more than 100 pounds, crushed the rest of the field while simultaneously shattering the course record. Fazioli's time of 2:47:22 eclipsed the previous women's mark of 2:50:13 set by Lori Adams in 1987. The only runner Fazioli didn't beat among the more than 500 other competitors Sunday was men's winner Erik Cagnina of Columbus, Ohio. He motored through the course in 2:41:58. But it was Fazioli who raised eyebrows and dropped jaws. Her time in her first marathon automatically qualified her for the Olympic Trials in St. Louis in 2004. "I never hit the wall. I felt better at the 22nd or 23rd mile than I did at the ninth or 10th," she said. "I ran the second half almost two minutes faster than the first half. I had another couple of miles in me." As it turns out, she didn't need them. The 21-year-old red-head will save them for St. Louis. "I was going to use this race to qualify for Boston (Marathon in April)," Fazioli said. "Now that I have a spot in the (Olympic) Trials, I think I'll skip it (Boston)." Although Fazioli is new to the marathon, she is hardly a novice to running. Fazioli made the varsity cross-country team at Averill Park High when she was 11. Before she graduated, Fazioli became a three-time state champion. This past spring she completed four years at the University of Colorado with a degree is history. Currently she is working on her master's degree in industrial and labor relations at Penn State. "If I didn't have this weekend off from classes, I wouldn't even have entered this race," she said. And then she had to convince her father Mike she was ready for a marathon. "He tried to tell me I wasn't old enough," Fazioli said. "But I've always felt I had the form and mechanics to be a marathoner." Her father, a veteran of 10 marathons with a personal-best 2:46:21 on this same course in 1985, followed her on his bike Sunday. "I didn't know there was only one runner ahead of me," said Fazioli, who received $500 for breaking the course record. "But I figured I must be somewhat close because I kept picking guys off in the last couple of miles." Cagnina was the only one she couldn't catch. And he looked pretty fresh at the finish. It was far off Dale Keenan's course-record 2:20:59 in 1984 but good enough to leave no doubt as to who was fastest Sunday. "It must have been my Aunt Jane's homemade macaroni," Cagnina said. "I had that for dinner last (Saturday) night." Jane Denofio of Schenectady is Cagnina's aunt. His grandfather is 83-year-old Joe Cagnina, who has been a barber in downtown Schenectady since 1946. "I came here to visit grandpa and looked for a race nearby," said the 32-year-old Cagnina. "I had never heard of this marathon before but am happy now I found it in the listings." Cagnina is more accustomed to ironman triathlons. He has competed in ironman events twice in both Hawaii and Lake Placid plus numerous ones in the Midwest. "I have to admit, my heart is more into the triathlons," Cagnina said. "But don't think I'm not happy about this. It's the best marathon I've ever run." Finishing third behind Cagnina and Fazioli was Marko LeGault of Montreal in 2:47:57. Fourth was Tim O'Shea of Cazenovia in 2:48:11. The first male runner from the Capital Region to cross the line was 40-year-old Russ Lauer of Troy. His time of 2:50:26 was good for fifth overall. "This is only my second marathon," Lauer said. The next area finisher was Dennis Fillmore of Ballston Spa. The 50-year-old cranked out a 2:57:22 for seventh place overall. "I'm was trying to qualify for Boston (Marathon)," he said. "This (2:57:22) will do it." Rik Stevens of Gansevoort finished ninth overall with a 2:58:07. "You probably won't believe this, but I had a dream last (Saturday) night that I would run a 2:58," said the 37-year-old Stevens who had never cracked the three-hour barrier. Megan Leitzinger of Albany was the women's runner-up for the second year in a row. She was clocked in 3:05:06. Finishing third was Kim DeRocco of Amsterdam who the day before had placed second in Albany's 5k Race for Literacy. DeRocco's time Sunday was 3:15:37. Nancy Taormina of Albany was fourth in 3:18:02 and Linda Kimmey of Clifton Park ran a 3:18:39 for fifth. For the first time in the 20-year history of the event, a half-marathon was staged before the main field. John Dowling of Warner, N.H., was the winner in 1:16:50 followed by John Druzba of Saratoga in 1:18:23. Katie Roden of Albany took the women's title in 1:31:58.
ALBANY - Jennifer Fazioli was planning to run the Boston Marathon next spring to try to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2004. Now she doesn't have to. Fazioli, the three-time Class B cross country state champion from Averill Park, hit the jackpot at the Mohawk-Hudson River Marathon on Sunday with a stunning debut at the distance under ideal marathon weather conditions. Not only did she finish second overall behind Erik Cagnina of Columbus, Ohio (2:41:58), but she also ran fast enough - 2:47:22 - to qualify for the Olympic Trials and break a 15-year-old course record, for which she raked in $500. "It's going right into the savings account," Fazioli said. "I'm in grad school, so I need it." Another thing the 21-year-old Fazioli, a Colorado University graduate who is pursuing a master's degree at Penn State, can take to the bank is a spot in the Olympic Trials, which will be held in St. Louis in April 2004. Sunday's race was supposed to be just an experiment for Fazioli, who was not blessed with sprinting ability but can turn her feet over at a high rate for long distances. It became much more. She's a natural for the marathon, but has resisted the urge to try one, especially on advice from her father, Mike Fazioli, an experienced marathoner who has been a strong influence on his daughter's running career and knows what kind of punishment the marathon delivers. On Sunday, Mike Fazioli kept track of his daughter on a bike, and at about 22 miles, he told her she had a good chance for a course record. "I turned to him and said, `I'm not going for 2:50, I'm going for under 2:48,' " Jen Fazioli said. Fazioli coasted home, and said she still had a few more miles in her. She easily broke the previous course record of 2:50:13 set by Lori Adams in 1987 and was comfortably under the 2:48 qualifying time for the Olympic Trials. Even though she's a multiple former high school state champ and Division I college distance runner, Fazioli didn't know what to expect from herself on Sunday. She was never able to get in a long training run beyond 18 miles, had never seriously raced longer than 10 miles and she came down with a head cold last week. "I just kind of thought 2:55 was a good goal, but then I got into the race and really started picking it up the second half and clicking off the miles," Fazioli said. "As I got closer, I found that I was close enough to qualify for the Trials, so I was going to push it as hard as I could to hit that. "I wasn't expecting to do it here. I was just thinking I want to get one and see how it feels. The qualifying time for Boston isn't that hard, and then maybe do a real serious one at Boston and qualify for the Trials there, but when you're that close, why do an extra marathon if you don't have to?" Fazioli said she might not even race another marathon before the Trials, relying instead on a good training program of 70-80 miles a week, which isn't always easy since she's taking a full course load in industrial and labor relations at Penn State and has a graduate assistantship that requires 20 hours of research per week. Still, this is her event, and she's ready to see what she can do. "I've waited for marathons my whole career," Fazioli said. "I've wanted to run one for a long time. My dad still thinks I'm too young, but it's just what I love. My form and everything is just more equipped for longer distances. We were kidding each other - he's still got his family marathon PR [personal record]. His is 2:46:21." Enjoy it while you still can, dad.
Cagnina's victory had a family element to it, too, as he planned a trip to see his grandfather, 83-year-old Joe Cagnina of Schenectady, to coincide with the MH River Marathon. Erik Cagnina's aunt, Jane Denofio, weaved her magic on Saturday by cooking homemade pasta, and Joe Cagnina, who has worked at the barbershop on Jay Street across from City Hall since 1946 and has owned it since 1975, was at the Corning Preserve to root his 32-year-old grandson on. The rest of the field should have such a support group, as Erik Cagnina looked strong coming across the finish line. A triathlete who has competed in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii twice, Cagnina ran a PR for non-triathlon marathons by over six minutes. "I did Ironman Wisconsin four weeks ago, and sometimes recovery can take a long time, so if something happened where I was still not feeling quite up to it, I probably would have just come down to visit and maybe watch the race," Cagnina said. "But recovery went pretty well, pretty quick, so I was feeling pretty good within a couple weeks and I had a couple good workouts last week. "By the time the run comes around in the triathlon, a lot of times, you're just kind of doing what you can do to hold on. Here, you can really kind of pace yourself and put some strategy into it." Besides the sideline support, Cagnina probably got some genetic help from his grandfather - Joe Cagnina ran cross country for Nott Terrace High School in the 1930s. A bond manager for a regional bank in Columbus, Erik Cagnina ran in a pack of four for all of half a mile and then pretty much had the race to himself. "I felt comfortable," Cagnina said. "I was a little nervous because there were no mile markers the first four miles or so. Then once I got to a mile marker, I was just under a six-minute pace. I had planned to hold that through about mile 15, then re-evaluate and run more by feel at that point and back off as I needed to. I had some little twinge cramps toward the end, but generally speaking I felt pretty good. "The secret weapon was aunt Jane's homemade macaroni last night. She took care of me."
