Nicole Blood, an undefeated 15-year-old sophomore from Saratoga Springs High School in New York, raced to a 32-second victory yesterday in the Northeast Regional High School Cross-Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Her time was 17 minutes 45 seconds on the hilly 5,000-meter (3.1-mile) course.
The first eight finishers in the boys' and girls' championship races qualified for the national finals on Dec. 13 in San Diego.
The boys' titlist was Ben True of North Yarmouth, Me., who triumphed by 20 meters in 15:23. True, a senior at Greely High who also excels in cross-country skiing, placed ninth in the 2002 national championships.
Blood, who led Saratoga Springs to a national No. 1 team ranking in girls' cross-country for the season, also earned her second berth in the finals. Last year she placed second in the Northeast and ninth in the nationals.
"I'm a lot stronger and have more experience this year," said Blood, who broke away from the field in the wooded, hilly section after a mile and a quarter. "I love the hills. Flat courses are boring. This had a roller-coaster effect."
Blood's s! ophomore teammate Lindsey Ferguson placed fourth in 18:24, making Saratoga the first school from the Northeast Regional to place two runners in the nationals in the same year.
In the boys' race, True, 17, surged after the two-mile mark. "I didn't look back; I just kept going," he said. "I knew Gras was right behind me and I was worried about his kick."
Victor Gras, a senior at Belmont High in Massachusetts, took second in 15:26. A native of France who came to the United States three years ago, Gras is another repeat finalist, placing 28th in the 2002 nationals.
Two other athletes who came to the United States in recent years, Lopez Lomong of Tully, N.Y., and Ahmed Haji of West Hartford, Conn., also qualified. Lomong, from Sudan, ran at a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to the United States; he finished sixth. Haji, from Somalia, started running in the United States; he was eighth.
One surprise near miss in the boys' race was the New Jersey state champion, Mohamed Khadraoui, a native Moroccan from Kennedy High in Paterson. Khadraoui, who won his state meet last week by 17 seconds, finished ninth after losing several places in the homestretch.
